You are correct. France didn't deploy correctly and James did not spot it. Neither did anyone else until round 2. Some crafty umpiring led to the smaller army becoming a garrison.

Hi, thanks, now I'm looking for the 4 titles I don't have! There are not many titles about the Italian Wars, but I can recommend the following further reading.

Renaissance Armies. G. Gush. A must have wargamers book for this period.

Cesare Borgia His Life and Times. S. Bradford. A great read concentrating on early Papal strategy, campaigns and debauchery etc.

Siege Warfare. Duffy. A very good (& long) section on the development of fortifications during the Italian Wars.

History of Europe 1450 - 1660. P.J. Helm. Get this from a library before you buy it. A good simple overview of the wars plus added flavour.

Renaissance Europe 1480 - 1520. J.R. Hale. Not a wargamer's book unless you get into the period. It covers everything from diet and health to travel and politics. Fascinating.

Machiavelli. Sydney Anglo. Again not a wargamers book. It does have sections dealing with the political efforts of the famous Florentine diplomat.
